Niacinamide: what it does and what it will not do
4 min· Written by chemists
The most over-hyped and most reliable ingredient in modern skincare. Here is the honest scope.
What it does
Reduces the visible size of inflamed blemishes. Slows the transfer of melanin to the top layer of skin, which fades dark marks over 8 to 12 weeks. Supports the barrier by boosting ceramide production. Reduces surface oiliness in some people.
What it does not do
Niacinamide is not a spot treatment. It does not shrink pores structurally; it only makes them look less congested. It does not bleach the skin. It does not replace SPF for pigmentation.
How to use it
Twice daily, in a serum or cream, at 2 to 5 percent. It layers with almost everything, including acids and vitamin C. Give it a full 8 weeks before judging results on tone.
